However, this time around I feel that City On The Edge of Battle perfectly builds on what was established in Planet of the Monsters.įirstly, Haruo (much maligned by the community the first time around) actually gets some development and questions his motivation to kill Godzilla. Granted part of that is due to it being the first of a three-part story. I felt that the technobabble and build up to earth just plodded on for too long, and the characters were just there to move the story forward rather than feel like characters.

I was lukewarm on the Planet of the Monsters.
#Godzilla city on the edge of battle miana movie
Lemme tell ya, this may be an unpopular opinion since apparently people are already deciding to hate this movie without seeing it, but I loved it. Just felt like watching the first one all over again.

This completely killed the feeling that they couldn’t do anything to stop him. The worst thing though was that they talked about the impossibility of defeating this titanic Godzilla, but also made sure that the protagonists were much better equipped to do so. Provoke Godzilla, lure him into The Valley, blast him with every cannon they have to no effect, and then blow him up. Also the plot felt really recycled, probably because it was recycled and they made sure the viewers knew that. But this time they used a ton of aerial shots, which made it harder to judge size with the absence of a familiar scale.

In the first film they gave you a sense of scale, you felt that Godzilla was massive, and that it was a huge uphill battle, plus when the original Godzilla popped out of the ground it really gave you a sense of awe. Camera angles were a huge downgrade for one. I’m the exact opposite, I feel like they gave up a lot of the good bits from the last film.
